Coral Lake, Honoring Yoichi

Every year on May 8th at 2 pm, Jianan’s Agricultural Water Conservation Commission holds a memorial service at the beautiful Coral Lake for the Jianan Canal Engineers, Mr. and Mrs. Hatta Yoichi. Hatta Yoichi was born in 1886 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. In 1917, he was appointed to begin the plans for the Jianan Irrigation Waterways. From 1920 to 1930, he supervised the investigation for the irrigation work, as well as its planning and designing. He finished the first dam using the Semi-hydraulic Fill technique, which came to be nicknamed after him, in addition to the construction of the irrigation system. Wushantou Reservoir (also known as Coral Lake) was the largest reservoir in Asia at the time of its completion.) However, on May 8, 1942, the ship Hatta Yoichi was on was attacked by an American submarine and the ship sank in the East Sea (Sea of Japan). Jianan’s Agricultural Water Conservation Commission designed a memorial next to the bronze statue commemorating both Hatta Yoichi and his wife. The waterway’s opening date was set for May 8, also in memory of its designer. The environment surrounding the reservoir is beautiful. You can choose to stay in a vast camping area, or you can live in a neighboring hotel, which provides authentic dishes native to the region.
